How it works

This page takes a YouTube video and gives you its transcript, with the caption language selectable. If a video ships with subtitles in more than one language, you can pull the one you want rather than the one YouTube happened to default to — which is the difference between reading a talk in your own language and guessing your way through a machine translation.

It is useful for language learners working through a foreign-language video, for anyone reading a talk whose only captions are in a language they do not speak well, and for pulling the original-language text when you need to quote it accurately rather than approximately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the transcript in a language other than English?
Yes, when the video has a caption track in that language. Pick the language and the transcript comes back in it. If the video only has one caption track, that is the one you get.
Does this translate the audio itself?
No. It reads the caption tracks the video already has. It does not generate a new translation of speech that was never captioned — that would be speech recognition plus machine translation, which is a different and much heavier operation.
How do I know which languages a video has?
The page lists the caption tracks it found and marks which one is the video's default. If only one track exists, there is nothing to choose between.
Is the transcript translated or is it the original subtitles?
It is the original subtitle text for whichever track you select — not a re-translation. That matters when you are quoting someone, because a second-hand translation of a translation drifts.
Can I download the translated transcript?
Yes. The copy and download controls work the same regardless of which language you selected, including SRT and VTT output.
