MP4 to Text
Upload an audio or video file and get the text back. Files are forwarded to the configured speech-to-text provider and never stored.
File transcription is not switched on yet, so you cannot upload a file here for now. Transcripts from YouTube videos work today and need no file.
This takes an MP4 and gives you the spoken content as text. The audio track is extracted and recognised, so what you get back is a transcript of what was said rather than anything about the picture.
It is useful for screen recordings, recorded talks, and any video whose value is in the talking rather than the visuals — the cases where reading is faster than watching.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it describe what is on screen?
- No. Only the audio track is transcribed. Anything shown but not said is not captured, which is a real limitation for demonstrations and screencasts.
- How long does an MP4 take?
- The audio has to be recognised, so it takes roughly as long as the recording is — unlike the YouTube pages, which read captions that already exist and return in a second or two.
- What video formats are supported?
- MP4 is the safe choice. Other containers work if your browser can decode them; if a file is rejected, that is usually why.
- Can I get subtitles out of it?
- You get a transcript with timings where the provider supplies them, which can be turned into subtitles. For a video that already has captions, the YouTube pages return them directly and much faster.
- Is my video uploaded?
- The audio is sent to the speech-to-text provider. The video itself is not stored by this site.
