How to Summarize a YouTube Video

A short, practical walkthrough.

Summarising a video

Generate the transcript first, then press Summarize. If an AI provider is configured on this instance you get a written summary; if not, you get an extractive summary that picks the highest-signal sentences from the transcript itself.

Why start from the transcript

A summary is only as good as its input. Working from the full transcript means the summary can quote specifics — numbers, names, the actual argument — instead of vague generalities.

Summarising is what you do when a video is longer than the time you have and you need to know whether it is worth the time — or when you need the substance without the watching. The result is a compression of what was said, built from the transcript rather than from the title or the description.

Because it comes from the transcript, the summary reflects the actual content. That also sets its limit: anything the video showed rather than said is not in the transcript, and so is not in the summary.

Frequently asked questions

How is the summary made?
From the video's transcript. Where an AI provider is configured the summary is model-generated; otherwise a local extractive method produces it from the transcript directly. The page tells you which one you got.
Can I summarise a video with no captions?
Not this way — with no transcript there is nothing to summarise. Videos with auto-generated captions are fine, which covers most spoken-word uploads.
How accurate is it?
It is a compression, not a rewrite, so it can flatten nuance and it will not capture anything that was shown rather than said. Use it to decide what to watch, and the full transcript when the detail matters.
Does summarising cost anything?
The local summary is free. If AI summarising is enabled, the page waits for you to ask for it rather than generating on load, so you are never charged for a summary you did not request.
Can I get the summary in another language?
Yes — the summary follows the language you have selected on the site.
Can I still read the full transcript?
Yes, it is on the same page. The summary is an addition to the transcript, not a replacement for it.
